چکیده
Axiomatically, the definition of the joint prob ability of several continuous variables is based on a cumulative distribution function, F(x, y, z, K), whose properties are analogous to the case of a single variable, and the probability density function derives from it. However, in practice, the probability P is never defined from a cumulative function, F, but from a density function, f, assum ing that f belongs to one of the families of multi variate continuous probability distributions, such as the multivariate Gaussian, also called multivari ate normal. Other families of continuous probabil ity density distributions can be found in statistical textbooks and on the Internet. The derivation of the marginal density function from a joint probability density is analogous to the case of discrete variables, just replacing the sum with an integral. For example, in the case of a joint density f(x, y) defined over two variables X and Y, the marginal density distributions are

Implicit Information in Directionality of Verbal Probability Expressions
Many verbal probability expressions (verbal probability) can be categorized into either positive terms (e.g., likely, small chance) or negative terms (e.g., uncertain, poor chance). This distinction reflects the semantic function of communicative focus called “directionality.” Previous studies have shown that positive (or negative) terms refer to potential occurrence (or non-occurrence). We con...
متن کاملVerbal expressions of probability in informed consent litigation.
Informed consent litigation provides a forum in which probabilistic evidence is elicited from physicians as parties or as expert witnesses. The authors reviewed over 450 medical informed consent opinions reported by both trial and appellate courts in all 50 states over 40 years to determine 1) the extent to which verbal expressions of probability were used by testifying physicians to characteri...
متن کاملCommunicating environmental risks: Clarifying the severity effect in interpretations of verbal probability expressions.
Verbal probability expressions are frequently used to communicate risk and uncertainty. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for example, uses them to convey risks associated with climate change. Given the potential for human action to mitigate future environmental risks, it is important to understand how people respond to these expressions. In 3 studies employing a novel manip...
متن کاملDo You Mean What You Say? The Effect of Uncertainty Avoidance on the Interpretation of Probability Expressions - A Comparative Study between Spanish and German
In times of globalization, differences between cultures and in the interpretation of linguistic terms can lead to misunderstanding in communication. The present study focuses on the influence of cultural dimensions, especially uncertainty avoidance, on the interpretation of verbal probability expressions. It is hypothesized that uncertainty avoidance has an effect on the interpretation of uncer...
متن کاملWhen uncertainty meets life: The effect of animacy on probability expression
Everyone faces uncertainty on a daily basis. Two kinds of probability expressions, verbal and numerical, have been used to characterize the uncertainty that we face. Because our cognitive concept of living things differs from that of non-living things, and distinguishing cognitive concepts might have linguistic markers, we designed four studies to test whether people use different probability e...
متن کاملSelection of Verbal Probabilities: A Solution for Some Problems of Verbal Probability Expression
A method for verbal expression of degree of uncertainty is described. It requires the subject to select a phrase from a list that spans the full range of probabilities. In a second, optional, step, the subject indicates the numerical meaning of each phrase. The method avoids two problems of verbal probabilities-the indefinitely large lexicon and the individual differences in the interpretation ...
